The business started in 1977 as Bulkley Valley Farm Supply, when Lenard Vriend and his father John and mother Shirley acquired a three-acre property in Telkwa and built a farm feed and hardware retail store. Even though the store is located only 10 km east of Smithers, many people didn't have much hope for business surviving in a town that at the time, had only 350 residents.
Lenard married Joyce soon after the store opened, and it didn't take long for the Vriends to prove the doubters wrong. The rapid growth through the first ten years was the result of Joyce and Lenard recognizing the demand for competively priced building materials, good service and prompt delivery. While farm supplies were and still are a valued part of the business, lumber and building supplies become the bread and butter, and as a result, in 1995 the business name was changed to Bulkley Valley Home Centre.
In 2000, the company purchased the land and building of the Houston Co-op and opened a store in Houston. Two stores helped the whole operation take advantage of volume purchases and offered better prices to its customers. In 2008, a major renovation was completed at the Telkwa store.
Today, Bulkley Valley Home Centre employs 25 people, runs six delivery trucks and is still compensating for its small town locations with competitive prices, excellent customer service and prompt delivery.
The business services customers east as far as Burns Lake, west to Terrace and north to Stewart, Dease Lake and Telegraph Creek.
